St Mary's Church, Chilton
St Mary's was another excellent choice, an odd appearance outside, due to the slope of the ground, a main approach from the south from where you could not see the low north transeptal tower. An impressive rebuilding of the nave took place in Perpendicular times, much wider than before and leaving the chancel off centre. Further enlargement included the south east chapel. Everyone else was heading inside; however I walked round the exterior, where a helpful local asked me if I'd seen the knight. I hadn't and so he pointed out the 14th century effigy placed high on the east gable of the nave outside - most unusual! (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
