St Mary's Church, Hambleden

Hambleden, St Mary's Church

This very long church is a typical mix'n'match of Norman to Victorian, with a bit too much of the latter provided by Woodyer. The setting is in an attractive village. There is a fabulous 17th century Monument to Sir Cope D'Oyley in the east aisle of the north transept, where the whole family kneel on the tomb chest together. Three daughters and the second oldest son carry skulls, a sign that they were dead either before the parents or before the tomb was commissioned.

There is an odd Norman font - retooled, but not too much, and an oddly sited blocked Norman doorway into the west wall of the north transept. One brass figure was spotted under the tower. Outside is a large 18th century mausoleum is sited north of the church, but we were told not to proceed beyond the yellow tape, a single strip of which lay on the grass.
