St Mary's Church, Bucklebury
St Mary's Church in Bucklebury takes some finding, although it is quite close to the Chieveley junction of the M4 (Oxford, Newbury). This view of the exterior from the south west - rather than the near-obligatory south east - shows it's springtime at last! On last Thursday afternoon it was fairly basking in early sunshine. It is a “ChurchCrawler's Church” for sure, a little of something for everyone, strong on atmosphere but no great architecture. The tower is 15th century Perpendicular but the pinnacles and spike are 18th century and from the ground appear to be of wood! (or do I need glasses?) Go here - you will not be disappointed (unlike many of the churches near Newbury - if you don't like Victorian stuff!) (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
