Inside St Mary's Church, Chieveley
The church has been heavily restored, the work of J W Hugall 1873 (and the nave entirely his), but the chancel is still quite fine Early English work with a richly shafted east triple lancet arrangement. I thought the church was locked... the door did not open when I turned the handle... but the vicar who came down opened the door as easily as anything (using a bit more ooomph...!) Still, he was very pleasant! This view is from midway up the nave - part of the church is now de-pewed, and the area separated by low curtains from the rest of the nave and aisle which makes a long vista inside impossible as the curtains don't draw back! The north aisle has a modern ceiling with recessed lighting, as the parish have turned the roof space into rooms reached by a modern two-storeyed extension. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
