St Augustine's Church, East Hendred
Another large church with some interesting fittings and an outer south aisle which Pevsner neglects to mention. Medieval work exists (much restored) in the stalls, south chapel screen and in a ceilure over the 19th or early 20th century rood screen. There are contrasting two-bayed chancel arcades, high Victoriana on the north side and elegant Perpendicular on the south. A Flemish or German chest now serves as an altar in the north transept. A confusing lectern, an amalgam is likely, but on a base said to be three crocodiles, which look more like pigs or dogs to me! (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
