St Mary's Church, Speen
St Mary's is situated just west of Newbury, or rather is almost swallowed up by present-day Newbury - yet the area around the church is still very rural in feel. This church is a survivor as it had been targetted for closure when it lost its vicar. Not only is it now surviving but the church is having some serious money spent on it and the future seems more secure for the building if not for the religious function it should serve. The nave is being renovated for continuing use as a hall for the village, the chancel currently curtained off reverting to a chapel. East and west walls are covered in scaffolding as is the interior of the nave. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
