St Mary's Church, Thatcham
St Mary's Church is quite large but rather dull, again a 19th century restoration has improved or retooled most of what remains of interest. The western part of nave and aisles are screened off at lower level by a deep gallery. No clerestory to bring in much-needed light. Norman south doorway and chancel arch. A large worn tomb chest in the south chapel, and here too a hanging monument with kneelers to Nicholas Fuller d.1620 and wife, in alabaster apart from Mrs Fuller's head. This view is from the south east. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
