St Matthew's Church, Midgham

Midgham, St Matthew's Church

Dating from 1869, and impressively sited, seemingly all on its own when seen from the M4 Motorway, because its village lies to the north on the slopes of the hill. Again Pevsner's description is inaccurate - he neglects to mention the south aisle. He does mention the fine SW steeple and its odd fat polished marble pier in its NE angle inside. The broaches of the spire are continued up into plinths for statues, not all surviving sadly.
