The Village Pump (1840), Barlow

Barlow, The Village Pump (1840)

The history of the pump is unknown, but perhaps in common with similar pumps in other villages, it was provided by a local benefactor.

Barlow is one of several Derbyshire villages to ‘dress’ its wells. Three wells are dressed on the Wednesday following St Lawrence's Day (10th August). The wells are dressed in situ, with whole flower heads being used. It is believed that Barlow's well-dressing is one of the genuinely ancient examples, with tradition dating it from 1615.
