Independent Chapel, Chinley
This photo was taken by Sheila Turton in Spring 2002. Many of her relatives are buried in this graveyard and the land the Chapel is built on belonged to her 6x gt grandfather John HADFIELD of Chapel Milton. He sold it in 1711 in the names of William BAGSHAW of Ford (later to become known as ‘The Apostle of the Peak’), James CARRINGTON of Chinley and Robert MIDDLETON of Chapel on le Frith, for the sum of just TEN POUNDS! Another ancestor of Sheila's on a different side of the family, Joseph SHIRT of Bowden Head, contributed £1 to the building of the Chapel. The actual details of the Chapel's foundation are recorded in the introduction to The Diary of James Clegg of Chapel en le Frith (Ed: Vanessa S. Doe - one of Derbyshire Record Society Publications.).
A list of names of those contributing to the building of Chinley Chapel is given in Part 3, Appendix I:4 to Clegg's Diary, and a list of Trustees, 1711-1748 in ibid:, Appendex I:5. (Commentary provided by Rosemary Lockie) |
