Pictures of the Past : The Chequers Inn (1), Froggatt
The Chequers Inn at Froggatt dates from the 16th century. It is the only in the Peak to display the sign of 'chequers' - a very ancient symbol for an Inn, or 'taberna diversoria' probably imported into this country by the Romans. For more details see Take a Look at: Inn Signs. The caption on this postcard says "Chequers Froggatt Sheffield 1907". There is also another postcard of The Chequers Inn (2) taken from the opposite direction. |
