Old Postcard of Early Motor Rally, Grindleford
An early Motor Rally - if you look closely you can see that the vehicles all have numbers on them (in addition to registration plates). Presumably they have stopped for refreshments, as there were several tea rooms on ‘Red Lion Row’ (the cottages on the right in the photograph), in addition to the Red Lion Pub itself. There were 3 copies of photographs of this event at the ‘Grindleford Then and Now’ exhibition which took place in early October, 2004; this one had belonged to Billy Moseley, who was the village Cordwainer, and was kindly provided by his granddaughter. It was on display in his workshop for many years - hence the faded condition. There is a postmark on the back of 1904. It shows the site of his workshop (on the right) before there were any buildings on the left of the road, where today there are shops and (by the bridge, behind us and on the right) the village post office. This is one of several old postcards contributed to the ‘Grindleford Then and Now’ Exhibition in October 2004. (Commentary provided by Rosemary Lockie) |
