St Giles's Church, Hartington

Hartington, St Giles's Church

This photograph was taken on 22nd August 1986, whilst visiting the Church to see a special Domesday exhibition, illustrating the history of the parish.

One of the exhibits on display was the Manor Court Book in a glass case, and a photocopy of the Muster Roll relating to Hartington, c.1570. Shown in the latter, under “Able persons for pikes”, John Houseley.

Also on display in the Church were various tax records relating to the parish; for instance the tax on face powder.

This is just to whet your appetite to demonstrate what information may be available on your own ancestors living in Hartington. It is presumed all these records are now kept at the Derbyshire Record Office.

A photograph of the interior of St Giles's Church (with further commentary) is also available.
