Stoke, Stoke Quarry (c.1930s)


This photograph of Stoke Quarry workers is taken whilst they are having their ‘snap’. My uncle Joe (b.1900) is second from the right. It is not known who any of the others are. There is what appears to be an earthenware bottle in front of the man on the left. This looks to me like one of the ones my mother kept which she said used to contain ginger beer, and which she referred to as ‘stone’ bottles. Was this because they were manufactured by the well-known firm, or were they called ‘stone’ because of what they were made of - the stone-nature of their apperance? I assumed the latter, and one rather imagines they would have contained something perhaps a little stronger than ginger beer!

This is one of the postcards in ‘The Reeves Collection’.
In other words, it belonged to my mother.
