Old Postcard of Stoke Quarry (c.1940s), Stoke

Stoke, Stoke Quarry (c.1940s)

We can identify one, or possibly two of the gentlemen on this photograph. One is Frank Riley, sitting in the centre with his hands resting on his knees. Directly behind him is possibly Jack Wood. The aggressive-looking lifting/traction mechanism in the background appears to be steam-driven; these were still in use until the early 1950s, so the date may be later than my suggestion of the 1940s, especially as Frank appears to be only slightly younger than when I knew him in the 1960s!

It is a surprise to me personally how many photographs have been taken of Quarry workers; my understanding is that the gaffers never would have allowed them time off to have their ‘pictures’ taken!!!
