Stoke, The Hall (c.1937)


This is a view of the Hall from circa 1937, when the Stoke Hall Estate, in the ownership of Captain Michael Hunter of Sheffield, was offered for sale.

It was described as "The Handsome Stone-Built Georgian Residence STOKE HALL, With Commodious Outbuildings and Well Timbered Grounds." The sale included "THE FISHING RIGHTS (Trout and Grayling) on The River Derwent from Stoney Middleton Brook to the Tannery, Grindleford." (and) "The Shooting over the Estate produces a mixed bag of grouse, partridges, pheasants and duck, and the coverts are well known for high birds. Meets of the High Peak and Barlow Hounds are available within easy distance, three days a week."

The Estate was offered for "SALE by AUCTION, as a whole, or afterwards in Lots". It was in fact sold by Lot, with parts of it further divided in 1953.

This is one of the postcards in ‘The Reeves Collection’.
In other words, it belonged to my mother.
