Old Postcard of The Hall (c.1937), Stoke
This is a view of the Hall from circa 1937, when the Stoke Hall Estate, in the ownership of Captain Michael Hunter of Sheffield, was offered for sale. It was described as "The Handsome Stone-Built Georgian Residence STOKE HALL, With Commodious Outbuildings and Well Timbered Grounds." The sale included "THE FISHING RIGHTS (Trout and Grayling) on The River Derwent from Stoney Middleton Brook to the Tannery, Grindleford." (and) "The Shooting over the Estate produces a mixed bag of grouse, partridges, pheasants and duck, and the coverts are well known for high birds. Meets of the High Peak and Barlow Hounds are available within easy distance, three days a week." The Estate was offered for "SALE by AUCTION, as a whole, or afterwards in Lots". It was in fact sold by Lot, with parts of it further divided in 1953. There is also a photograph of the rear of The Hall (from Froggatt) taken in the present day (2004). For more information on Stoke Hall, and the Stoke Estate generally see Stoke (GENUKI). (Commentary provided by Rosemary Lockie)
