St Faith's Church (Parry Monument), Bacton
Blanche PARRY was “one of the Gentlewomen of the Queen's Magesty's Privy Chamber” (Elizabeth I), and her Her Will of 21 Jun 1589 left a considerable sum (£500) “to purchase lands to build an Almshouse for 4 poor people” from the parish of Bacton. She was born in 1508, died in 1589/90, and according to the church leaflet, the Queen paid for her funeral. Pevsner is quite scathing of the monument, although quotes its inscription in full (which is actually quite difficult to read where it is sited, to the left of the altar) (Commentary provided by Rosemary Lockie) |
