St Mary's Church, Ashwell

Ashwell, St Mary's Church

Famed for its ‘graffiti’ purporting to be a sketch of Old St Paul's, the church has a seriously impressive tower with a Hertfordshire “spike” spire. It looks like a smaller top stage was added to the tower as an afterthought, to give it a bit of extra height; the paired lower belfry windows are what grab the attention rather than the smaller openings above. Large though the church attached is, it failed to really impress me much. Vaulted south porch, the tower was to have been vaulted too.
