St Mungo's Cathedral (SW View), Glasgow
Glasgow Cathedral is an unusual medieval building, being built on a sloping site which necessitated a vast arrangement of crypts under the choir and east end. To the south is the Blackader Aisle, thought to have been the crypt for a large south transept that was never constructed. After the reformation - as was common in Scotland - the single church was subdivided to serve three congregations. By the early 19th century there was a general clamour for the building to be returned to its former unified condition and although much fine detail is Victorian it is undeniably grand. There is a central tower, but two western towers were demolished in the 1840s, and the proposed ghastly Victorian replacements were thankfully never built. The transepts do not project in plan. A photograph of the interior of St Mungo's Cathedral (with further commentary) is also available. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
