St Mary's Church, Marshfield
Away from its village, in a very cold exposed spot. The porch entrance is bricked up so again we relied on the plates in the recently published “Gwent” volume of the Buildings of Wales to see what we were missing, an unusual Norman doorway. The church is notably long, but aisleless, with an unbuttressed west tower. It appears over-restored, and has a modern detached hall/rooms to the north connected by a covered walkway to a surprisingly ugly north door of the ?1970s punched through the old wall. Main-road Marshfield is called CASTLETON and almost side by side are two chapels, one Gothic and of stone (Methodist - now a Masonic Hall), the other of coloured bricks, Romanesquish, and Baptist. This looked like it has recently closed and could be under the conversion to house or similar status. This view is from the south west. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
