Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh
Another of Suffolk's top ten churches I guess, and not one that has excited me particularly in photo format. The reality is different, Holy Trinity church rises beside a marshy looking inlet, like an oil-tanker in harbour. The road seems to by-pass it, a narrow lane leads to a patch of land which serves as a car park, a space between a number of sheds and outbuildings. All the show is reserved for the parapets of the church and its close-set Perpendicular. windows, the tower is taller and gaunter than that at Wenhaston but without any of the showiness of other grand Suffolk towers and surprisingly without flushwork too. The porch has a modern statue in the niche over the doorway - probably depicting the Trinity, which will look better once the newness of the stone has mellowed. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
