Inside Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh
Inside all is simple and well proportioned, good taste seems to prevail. It has an air of intended neglect, rather than the spick and span feel of Lavenham or Long Melford, and the slightly uneven stone flagged floor greatly helps with this. Stylised angels in the roof, some faded glories too such as the remains of painting on the roof and screen, the vanished brasses from the ornate canopied tomb in the sanctuary, and the largely plain glass windows which flood the church with light. The woodwork figures on the choir stalls and benches, although damaged, are still to be enjoyed. There is also a small chapel fairly recently created over the south porch, reached by a narrow and rather dangerous spiral stone stair. Another church I came to “tick off” the list thinking I knew it and with no expectations, which left me impressed and satisfied that I had stopped here. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
