Inside St Lawrence's Church, Brundish

Brundish, Inside St Lawrence's Church

Inside the church is spacious and light, the nave with a plaster ceiling and the much narrower but almost as high chancel has a fine wooden roof which is probably a Victorian replacement. Very handsome five-light east window and on the south side of the sanctuary a superb 14th century angle piscina with pretty ogee canopy and slim shaft, the window by it continued down to form a stone seat. The conventional seating is a mix of medieval pews and box pews, the latter placed nearer the altar. There is also a very dilapidated (or rather eaten) single chair with misericord.

If you come here be sure to turn back the various pieces of blue carpet, because underneath there are some good brasses. In the recess by the pulpit is Sir Edmund, a priest, missed by Pevsner and his revisor Radcliffe as are several others - the best in the nave close to the chancel commemorates John Colby and his wife, their four sons and nine daughters. There are more in the sanctuary. Let's hope the third edition records them.
