St Mary's Church, Cavendish

Cavendish, St Mary's Church

One of my fellow travellers liked this one - and so did I, despite it having the misfortune (as he puts it) to be in a “chocolate box” village. It would be quite splendid anywhere really.

Little is older than the 14th century that I could see, but the 15th century Perpendicular parts are what makes it memorable (besides the setting by the village green). The clerestory is impressive with my first real display of East Anglian flushwork decoration on this trip. The tower is also memorable for its large staircase finished by an overlarge embattled turret carrying a bell in an iron tripod-like cage.
