St Mary's Church, Dennington
The building is fairly large yet ordinary, spacious but without the consistent ornamentation of - say - Lavenham or Long Melford. There is very little stained glass and hence good light floods into the building. The familiar screens were there (illustrated in several church books), yet the more I looked the more I realised how much there was to see. Medieval pews with small animals or grotesques, 18th century box pews, some excellent monuments including the coloured effigies in the south chapel, the odd “spandrels” in the aisle roofs with their painted tracery, a quirky early 17th century pulpit.......... Then there is the odd Sand tray in the north aisle for teaching kids to write / read (I had never seen one before) and some excellent stonework including the capitals (more like applied ornamentation) of the rather odd chancel arch. A window has a canopied surround like a monument - the more you look the more there is to enjoy. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
