Inside St Mary's Church, Earl Stonham
As so often here in Suffolk, the nave is aisleless but the church is 13th-14th century cruciform, embellished in the later Perpendicular by the addition of a tower and clerestory onto the nave, and with it the fabulous hammerbeam roof. The pulpit is Jacobean and had until recently three ancient hour glasses on the wall behind. I quickly noted the remains of wall paintings over the chancel arch, the fine font and medieval benches with carving. I avoided the biscuits four times too! Another very friendly and welcoming parish but time was marching on and it would soon be midday and I was only some 15 miles or so closer to home (out of 250!). (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
