Inside St George's Church, Bicknoller

Bicknoller, Inside St George's Church

Inside the church has a "Devon" arcade with bands of foliage for capitals, and the fabulous rood screen is also of the Devon type. The Bench Ends are also worthy of inspection, with panels of flowers, foliage with fruit or intricate tracery.

Pevsner does not mention the coloured wall memorial to John Sweeting Thorncombe d. 1688 and his wife Mary d. 1710. Angels support the coat of arms on top, inscription with flowers and skulls in the corners flanked by Tuscan pilasters and scrolly volutes with foliage trails and a winged putto head below (Arthur Mee does though). Pretty miniature pipe organ too.

The oldest part is easily missed as reset in the south east corner of the chancel is a Norman pillar piscina.
