St Michael's Church, Betchworth
Surrey churches are not considered of great renown, and generally dismissed as being largely Victorian restorations and rebuildings etc. This is true at Betchworth - although the church feels old, and has several interesting features, they are also not-quite right! This is clear in the south wall of the chancel - three two-light Decorated windows all match; the central one is old and with soft limestone or chalky worn stone tracery, but the other two copies of it in a hard durable stone imported to the county for this purpose by the Victorians. A photograph of the interior of St Michael's Church (with further commentary) is also available. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
