St Michael & All Angels Church, Lowfield Heath
South of Gatwick airport, and now moved as a parish from the Southwark diocese and Surrey to the chapel-of-ease status, Chichester diocese and West Sussex is a church of 1867 by William Burges, now at the point of redundancy and closure. Burges designed some superb “muscular” churches and although small, Lowfield Heath shows much originality. A wheel window in the west wall stand above an open lean-to loggia, and the steeple is bold and brusque, no-one would say beautiful. Although closed the church has not (yet) fallen victim to vandals. Its neighbours seem to be large office and freight and services distribution centres linked to the airport. Locked of course - a tantalising glimpse of the interior was obtained through the keyhole but a photo did not work. The church board says “Regular Services currently suspended”, an understatement. Objections to redundancy had to be logged by end of March 2005 - my view on closure is on the road markings................ (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
