Inside St Nicholas's Church, Charlwood
Inside it is architecturally poor, rather humble in scale and disorientated in feel, thanks to a medieval abandonment of the original nave, central tower and chancel for a later nave and Perpendicular chancel to the south. The original nave is very early and has one original Norman window. The crossing and base of the tower of a similar period late 12th century. The south arcade is 13th century but the original chancel was rebuilt along with the wider aisle-new-nave in the 14th. It also contains what is apparently Surrey's best medieval screen - rather unexciting to those of us from the west country (and east Anglia too I'd guess). A photograph of the Wall Paintings (with further commentary) is also available. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
