St John's Church (Archbishop Sheldon), Croydon

Croydon, St John's Church (Archbishop Sheldon)

At the east end of the south aisle and in the south chapel lie the monuments of two Archbishops of Canterbury - this one to Archbishop Sheldon d.1677 was damaged and its surviving parts rather poorly reassembled. Yet the semi-reclining effigy still impresses. [Ed: It looks to me as though he's just about to get up and shake his mitre at us because we've disturbed his sleep!]  The other is to Archbishop Whitgift d.1604.

A photograph of the exterior of St John's Church (with commentary) is also available.
