St John's Church (Archbishop Sheldon), Croydon
At the east end of the south aisle and in the south chapel lie the monuments of two Archbishops of Canterbury - this one to Archbishop Sheldon d.1677 was damaged and its surviving parts rather poorly reassembled. Yet the semi-reclining effigy still impresses. [Ed: It looks to me as though he's just about to get up and shake his mitre at us because we've disturbed his sleep!] The other is to Archbishop Whitgift d.1604. A photograph of the exterior of St John's Church (with commentary) is also available. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
