St Michael & All Angels Church, Croydon
I expected to find Croydon, St Michael & All Angels Church amongst Victorian Villas and with trees, but instead it has the bus station for company to the north and some depressing but newer office and commercial building to the east and south, and a building site to the west. It is prominently featured in books as an example of the work of John Loughborough Pearson, and built 1880-3. Brick with stone dressings, its stump of a south porch tower is not what was intended but sadly features prominently in the streetscape. Much better is this view from the bus station, showing grouping of the apse with flanking towerettes, like Pearson did at Truro Cathedral and elsewhere; and in fact I thought this building resembled the cathedral in its transept and west wall designs, especially inside. A photograph of the interior of St Michael & All Angels Church is also available. (Commentary provided by Phil Draper) |
